HOW DID SAKURACO BEGIN
Our journey began in 2015, when we started sharing popular Japanese snacks and candy worldwide with our sister brand, TokyoTreat.
But because our CEO and founder, Ayumi Chikamoto always enjoyed a cup of afternoon tea with traditional Japanese sweets or wagashi, she wanted to share this aspect of Japanese culture worldwide as well. In 2021, she founded Sakuraco to do just that.
BRIDGING THE GAP
To bring this traditional afternoon tea culture worldwide, Sakuraco is dedicated to bridging the gap between tea enthusiasts and local artisans in Japan.
This mutual relationship benefits our dedicated customers and supports local businesses. Because of this cultural exchange, we can give you a unique and authentic taste of Japan.

WHO IS SAKURACO?
We are passionate about bringing authentic Japanese sweets, local specialties, and their history worldwide.
Sweets range from mochi, dango, and taiyaki and feature flavors such as sakura (cherry blossoms), matcha (powdered green tea), and ume (plum). Join the Sakuraco community today and discover the authentic taste of Japan for yourself.
Monthly Curated Japanese Snack Experience
You can experience a new corner of Japan every month through authentic flavors and learn about Japanese culture through food and tea. Each box also has a detailed booklet to highlighting Japanese cuisine and culture! Past booklet topics include kakigori (shaved ice), tonkatsu (pork cutlet), takoyaki (round octopus dumplings), kitsune (legendary fox legend), and even geisha (traditional Japanese performing artists).
Supporting Local Makers and Communities
We're working with many family-owned businesses in Japan that have dedicated their lives to the art of snack making. Quite a few of these businesses are multi-generational, meaning they’ve perfected their craft for hundreds of years! We guarantee that each snack carries a history and artistry unique to its local community.
Promoting Japanese Culture and Tradition
With each box, we share Japanese tea culture and unique experiences with our community every month. We also highlight seasonal themes such as tsukimi (moon-viewing season), New Year’s, and especially sakura season in the spring!

japanese afternoon tea culture
Japanese tea culture is a centuries-old tradition that is steeped in history and symbolism

While tea has been enjoyed in Japan for hundreds of years, its humble beginnings remain relatively unknown to many across the globe.

In early modern Japan, many rural workers created snack time during the afternoon to recharge and fuel up for the remaining parts of the day. This was necessary because they usually only ate breakfast and dinner. Even though more people ate lunch at the turn of the 20th century, people kept snack time as part of their routine.

As Japan began to modernize, afternoons became associated with having tea, a sweet or light snack, and chatting with friends. Today, you can experience the traditional Japanese afternoon custom of tea time at home with Sakuraco, something Ayumi still enjoys. Our curated selection of premium Japanese snacks, Japanese candy and teas allows you to taste the authentic flavors of Japan and share the experience with friends.
